Five Elemental Ninjas and Inception

Five Elemental Ninjas

Five Elelmental Ninjas Trailer

The Five Elemental Ninjas is an old martial arts movie in 1982.  The plot revolves around the lone survivor of a battle with ninjas who exterminated his entire clan, seeking revenge against said ninjas.  There isn't much wire fu to be had and the martial arts is solid.  Its traditional Chinese martial arts versus the 'Southern barbarians'(the movies words not mine) ninjas.  There is a samurai fight which is a bit short but nicely done anyway.  The ninjas themselves don't stand out all that much.  They are ninjas and do ninja like things, but nothing too absurd for a martial arts movie, like flying in on giant kites or something like that.  They use the five elements to fight.  Gold.  Which basically use shiny weapons, hats and clothes to reflect light.  Wood.  Using the forest to camouflage themselves and ambush the enemy.  Earth.  Pretty similar to wood, except these guys are in the ground, and can jump out at will and fight.  Water.  Probably the least impressive since they stay in the water to sneak up on the enemy.  To beat them would be to simply move away from the water. Fire.  These guys use, you guessed it, FIRE, and smoke.

The ninjas are pretty tough the first time around when they're killing the clan members, but the second time around, they're pretty easy.  They have a lot of ninja weaponry which I liked.  But they hadn't used them in any cool way unfortunately, sometimes I prefer the outlandish madness that happens in these martial arts movies but not so much here.  Fortunately, the martial arts is outstanding.  Yea it looks obviously choreographed but still its nicely done.  The special effects are okay, not that special but okay. Blood looks like, well not blood thats for damn sure.  The set design is fairly nice given that the ENTIRE movie is built on a set.  When they go fight the earth ninja, thats a set, fire, set too, even the water ninja, thats a set.  The only problem I have with the sets are that some of the props look a bit too fake apart from that I don't mind.  Overall a solid movie.

Inception

Inception Trailer

When I was watching this movie I kept thinking, 'man this shit looks pretty familiar.....'.  Only after the hour mark did I realised that yes, it reminded me of Shutter Island, not just because of DiCaprio but the overall tone of the movie and story concepts(obviously not the dream parts).   Thats not to say Inception isn't original, it is, in so far as original is these days.  Or that its not a great movie, it is.  But after watching it, I felt Shutter Island was a better movie.  Inception had all its pieces in place, great acting, and a good cast, amazing special effects, just spot on.  However I felt that it was lacking in imagination.  I mean, there could be so much more done here.  In terms of dreams and what could happen in them, and the potential symbolic imagery associated with them.  Whats here is serviceable but I really wished they pushed the envelope more in terms of what we could see.  For example there is a scene where Cobbs(Dicaprio) and his wife Mal(Marion Cotillard) build their private city, and it looks just the most generic city I had ever seen, with the exception being a little house in the middle.  I mean you have carte blanche to do anything and you just make some buildings like you would see in real life?  That's pretty lame to me.  As many problems as I have with The Cell, it dealt with dreams far better and had more powerful imagery in my opinion. Inception is a good movie to be sure but I say watch Shutter Island, its better.

 Dead Can Dance

Looking for some spiritual music?  A slow meditative affair, and as best I can describe, very spiritual.

The King of Fighters movie........

Well the King of Fighters movie is out and while I didn't expect much, I still had hope.  After watching Tekken though, I figured that movie wasn't early as crappy as I thought it would be, and this movie isn't either.  It isn't horrible, it isn't particularly great either, just barely serviceable actually.  I am a big K.O.F. though, and its the only fighting game that I've been able to keep abreast of its rather labyrinthine story, and as usual the movie takes a few liberties with games story which I will go through.  This isn't a real review of the movie, just nitpicking, there are many things wrong with this movie apart from what I will mention(bad pacing, bad acting etc), this is mostly a fans rant.  So without further do, here we go....

So first off The King of Fighters tournament itself takes place in a virtual environment setting( or really a different dimension), so its really a scifi story, sort of..

Mr big is white and not bald and doesn't even have an Australian, accent, isn't even a pimp with style.

Iori is with Mai, kinda, and forms a weird love triangle between Kyo, Iori, and Mai.

Iori is a pretty sociable guy albeit with some issues, and doesn't have red hair =(.

Terry is cop(C.I.A.) without any long hair(at least hes funny and in the movie, even though that doesn't match his game personality).

Kyo Kusanagi who hails from one of the most ancient and sacred Japanese clans, who is a Japanese high school student and whose costumes from the first KoF to kof99 or 2k is a Japanese school uniform is FUCKING WHITE, which doesn't even make sense since Kyo in the movie is a crap fighter(whats the point of making him white then, even though they say he's half Japanese in the movie).

Rugal is essentially a midget who uses guns (who even dresses up in hockey gear at one point as a joke, complete with play by play commentary).

Saisyu tries to kill Iori (goes completely against Saisyu's ideals as he wants the Yagami/Kusanagi feud to end).

Mature and Vice are lesbians lovers( I've always had my suspicions though...). They aren't even badasses and they aren't like their game counterparts by any stretch of the imagination. In fact they seem like good guys and are pretty nice except for when Rugal forces them to do his bidding.

They told the Orochi story of clan war of the Yagami/Kusanagi story of the game wrong.

Effects are odd (Mai has lightning effects when she uses her powers, Rugal has flame effects when he uses his, even his Kaiser wave is fire, Iori's flames are blue, and why did Iori do a fireball in the air?).

Riot of the Blood Iori is lame.

No mention of the Riot of the Blood crew except with Shermie in Vice's address book on her phone, nor Geonitz either but yet Rugal has lost his eye????)

Orochi is depicted as literally eight snakes coiled together.

Ignored fighting styles yet again( Mai doesn't do Ninjitsu, Mature uses tonfas?). which is becoming a sad trend in these fighting game to movie adaptations, remember the Tekken movie with Martial Law NOT doing Jeet kune do?

The characters in it just have the names of the characters from the game and sometimes tries to get their look right, but they don't even have the personalities which made the characters liked in the first place.

Ad thats it, if you're a fighting game fan, you might want to check it out, or you're one of those 'gotta-watch-em-all' people.

Music Recommendations

Giant Squid - Metridium Fields
Post Rock/Metal.  This band has grown on me, now I love them, the lead singer sounds a bit like Serj Tankian(from System of a Down) sometimes, but it seems he has modeled his voice after Serj's, they have toured together and have performed together also so that makes sense then.

Diablo Sing Orchestra - Butcher's Ballroom
Swing-Metal-Jazz-Opera?  If that sounds like something you would be interested in, check this bad out.  The female singer is pretty good, a trained opera singer too, ad man is she good.

A bunch of DIfferent Japanese Movies...

Watched alot of great movies.....okay not alot but some were just great.  I think I'll dedicate my blog to movies, anime, and music that inspire me or I think is pretty good.  There are lots of other blogs that do that I'm sure, but hell maybe I can offer something new.  So first off, the new Futurama episodes are great. They're so much funnier, maybe its the infusion of more current pop culture references, it feels more like a cross between Southpark and The Simpsons now.  The difference is, that it feels fresh and brings something different to the table.

Watched two foreign films, Japanese and Korean respectively.  Both awesome.  Well I enjoyed one more than the other.  Fish Story is the story of a little known(well they are nobodies really) rock band who do an album and a song off that album saves the world.  Now it isn't exactly the song that saves the world, I was actually expecting that but no, its the influences that the song has on various people and how its effects subtly have an effect on certain people who were instrumental in saving the world.  A great movie for creative people to watch.  At times an artist, musician or any one involved in a creative endeavour may feel like their work isn't having an impact or doesn't touch anyone and questions themselves and their work, this movie reminds them that your work may indeed touch someone, you may not get famous or get rich but it may in fact profoundly touch someone or affect their life in some way, and that person could indeed turn out to be the saviour of the world.

The other movie is Hansel and Gretyl, which according to IMDB
"When Eun-soo gets lost in a country road, he meets a mysterious girl and is led to her fairytale ike house in the middle of the forest. There, Eun-soo is trapped with the girl and her siblings who never age. Eun-soo finally discovers a way out which is written on a fairy tale book. But the book tells a story of none other than himself! "

This movie I didn't enjoy as much as I wanted to. It was a bit overlong and meandering. I did stick around however because I was intrigued by the setup and was eager to see how this would be carried out. There was the excellent mystery setup and trying to figure it out and decipher what was going on was truly great. Who are these children? Why are the parents seemingly afraid of them? Why can't he leave the forest? Can anyone leave the forest? However things stretch on a bit too long and it could've been tightened a lot more, I liked the characters but never loved any of them. Overall an excellent movie to watch, if youre in the mood for a fatasy movie of sorts along the lines of Pan's Labyrinth but not quite as dark.

Ah and some new music recommendations, Allagaeon, imagine if Black Dahlia Murder wasnt a one trick pony.

And Clint Mansell The Fountain OST, the best movie soundtrack I have ever heard.  I just can't stop listening to this thing.
